Our growing coalition is a diverse group, but what we absolutely have in common is that we are all diligently working to put the long-term well-being of our Chicago neighborhoods and citizens FIRST! See a list of our coalition members here.
Chicago is a city of neighborhoods – each one unique and reflecting the character of its community. It is in our neighborhoods that we raise our families, meet our friends and find connections. Multinational businesses see our neighborhoods differently. They see them as opportunities – they see buying power and profit.
When an outside chain decides to come to your neighborhood, they are deciding what products you can buy and they are defining the character of your neighborhood. Some say that businesses have a “right” to do anything they want – and that to challenge them in any way is “anti-competitive”. But why should an outside corporation have more “rights” than the people who live in a neighborhood and call it home?
Shouldn’t the neighborhoods have a say?
The Chicago Neighborhoods First Coalition has formed to help Chicago neighborhoods find their voice in how development proceeds in their community. Our view is that neighborhoods must take responsibility in ensuring that their community reflects their own unique needs and not the wishes of outside corporations. Neighborhoods must learn to be proactive in defining their needs and choosing their best options.
