HRC Corporate Equality Index 2011
Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index ranks corporation’s practices on issues related to sexual orientation and identity. Walmart received a rank of 40 on the 2011 report, reflecting that Walmart does not prohibit discrimination based upon gender identity, does not provide diversity training covering gender identity or have supportive gender transition guidelines, does not offer at least one transgender-inclusive benefit and does not offer domestic partner health insurance, COBRA, dental, vision, and legal dependent coverage. Walmart additionally received a 15 points deducted from their score for a large-scale official or public anti-LGBT blemish on their recent records, specifically by opposing a shareholder resolution to amend their non-discrimination policies to include gender identity.
Such anti-LGBT practices are not prevalent in the retail sector, with Kroger, Safeway, Costco, and Target all receiving scores of 75 or above.
