New Report Reveals Impact of “Just-in-Time” Scheduling on Workers, Families and Businesses

This article was originally published by the Retail Justice Alliance.

A new report by the Center for Law and Social Policy, Retail Action Project, and Women Employed shows the negative impact of unpredictable work schedules on workers, families and businesses. Titled Tackling Unstable and Unpredictable Work Schedules, the report examines the recent trend toward “just-in-time” scheduling practices, where employers match workers’ hours to consumer demand.

“Just-in-Time” practices are used in the retail sector where many workers hold part-time positions with few benefits. As the country’s largest retailer, Walmart has led the way in creating erratic and unpredictable shifts for its 1.4 million employees and its low-wage, part-time business strategy has influenced other retailers to do the same—making it almost impossible for workers to meet family obligations or have a second job.

The new report also highlights legislative and model workplace solutions, such as collective bargaining, guaranteed minimum weekly hours, advance notice practices and increased enforcement of current state laws that would enable workers to make ends meet and strengthen the economy.

The Walmart workers DON’T want a union, so why don’t you mind your own business and leave them alone.

Just-in-time has been around for decades since being started by the Japanese. It saves the company money and is used by most modern businesses. When a restaurant serves lunch and dinner, do you think they have the staff just stand around on the clock between the two. In a very competitive business like retail, costs have to be cut at every chance. The 5 year plus Obama recession has meant that companies have to fight to stay alive. The customer is king and you must tailor your business to fit what they want to do, not what you want.

Something I’ve noticed at my local walmart, is that the elderly greeters that used to work there, are all gone. All the little old white-haired men and women, who featured as greeters, are gone. Now that I think about it, no one is greeting me at the entrance anymore. If someone is there, they aren’t saying hello or trying to be visible.

An elderly man who was my neighbor in our trailer park used to work at this Walmart as a greeter for years. My son and his great-granddaughter were classmates; she lived with him and her great-grandmother, across the street from us. He was in his mid-80’s. About a year or so ago, they put him to work stocking shelves, cleaning spills, I’d see him running around, or rather tottering around as best he could, looking harried and desperate. He died within a month of the change in his job conditions. This is a true story.

Has Walmart purged its elderly greeters? Did they purposely kill them off by heartlessly switching them to labor they could not survive? How many died trying to keep up stocking shelves and cleaning up?

That’s what happened to my friend and neighbor.

I have a very serious question as to lifting these pallets at Wal-Mart.Shorter people as well as this guy maybe 5’5 140Lbs. and 62 Yrs. old. As young and old alone do by themselves throwing pallets sometimes water logged as the monsoon season and tornado’s are here. Oklahoma and going through all through the store one pallet stack’s or more everywhere in store I would think safety being a problem having them just one pallet all over at a Wal-Mart store would be a safety factor as well (Tripping). But my Wal-mart Mgr assures us he anyone can ask for help from a severely understaffed and over worked crew. But this is from the same management that says its okay to stand by a time clock and keep a crew from leaving at shift and to work till its done. Now call me stupid but serving in desert storm and again being in Iraq 2004-2006 being evaded out of H-3 Fallugah. and might I add being in the D.F.A.C.S Dec.21 2004.That as Wal-Mart being only closed Dec 25 and third shift does work. I was scheduled off as Sat, Sun, They told all not scheduled its mandatory and then kill it when they say.(As my pictures of the postings for seven year’s. As they make us stay after shift till job’s done and kill the time. Write ups for not doing so and annual raise 40 cent’s as they steal my money and my house on V.A. loan is being lost slowly as they control our lives. I am a Vet, Taxpayer, Forth generation citizen, no felonies, no state or federal assistance, No vet disability’s as my Ret air Force and Federal Ret father said am proud. He passed away 2003. I have had my tire’s cut and paint wrote in when I asked Management to fire or make these slacker’s help. He said you could always quit when I told him about my property. I have bogus write up’s that if anyone read translates harassment. They on a store load speaker worked to death a 67Yr old man to death! His old school work ethic(America’s biggest loss)In the meeting that night they broke the news’s and said he was old and fragile burden with the I.R.S. I have as my friend taken picks and documented drunks called in and saying no am drunk still asked to come and did dropping from a very top loft a bail of dog food just feet from me and Mike drunk he started cussing then crying (As he was tipsy) Well or Co-Mgr carries on with his affair with a female associate on the lot. Then moving in with another Mgr and her leaving his wife two children. As corp. sweep’s all under rug and he moves to Wal-Mart Va.Yes as I said I have had my personal information V.A. Federal paperwork lost as I can and will Date’s time’s, People. I would have any lawyer worth his salt see hear us ask others as to all I write and say. Listen to those still employed as they shuffle the deck moving all the Mgr. around and do it all over and no action as I have a case number for Attorney general Went to Wal-Mart H.R.as new Mgr to Micro Manage. D.O.L.As I will have to refinance my home loan Take a cash-out Know any great lawyer’s because am hurt Wal-mart say’s thank you hero’s and welcome home to Wal-Mart job’s I Was their for enforcing the Kurdish human right’s violation’s Bush his OIL.
