A Look Back at 2012: What We Accomplished

2012 was a very important year for Walmart workers and for those of us working to challenge Walmart to be a more responsible employer. Here’s a look back at a few highlights from 2012.

  • floridanativee

Those folks didn’t actually work at Wal-Mart did they?

    • MEProudLIBERAL

Neither do you, or so you say.

      • floridanativee

Of course, the difference is I don’t try to make people believe I do, Remember, all of this isn’t at all about the Wal-Mart employees, but about the millions of dollars of forced dues to the union bosses. No wonder the private sector union membership is in such a free fall. People are tired of paying for nothing.

Ridiculous. They are not paying for nothing. As working people we HAVE to have a voice. We have to band together. Nothing will be remotely fair or even safe without it. Belonging to a union costs money in dues, so what? It gives a voice we would not have otherwise. Private sector union membership is in “free fall” due to the GOP interference. Our right to collective bargaining is being stripped systematically as strenuously as the efforts to water down our rights to vote. Floridanative, pay attention to the rhetoric on BOTH sides. Listen with an open mind. Really study the issues. I personally am sick of the conservative idiots trying to eliminate all my rights one by one. I have two very young grandsons who I hope will be able to get an education, work for a decent living, have health care for themselves and their famililies and be able afford decent housing and food. None of that is possible without representation in a democratic process.

      • floridanativee

The free fall of the private sector union membership has gone on for the last 4 decades no matter who has been in charge in Washington. The unions have lost twice in state wide elections in WI and once in MI. Face it, the public isn’t buying what you are selling. The union bosses are telling you, it is the evil Republicans and the evil corporations. Fact is that it is the evil union bosses. This union here has wasted tens of million dollars of their members dollars over the last 20 plus years trying to get their hands on some of that Wal-Mart money and not gotten a cent. Some union bosses have spent an entire career and retired trying to get Wal-Mart money. It is all about the money and trying to fool the few remaining folks who still buy the lie it is about the “workers”. Nobody is trying to eliminate anybody’s rights except for the unions. It is still legal in all 50 states (Obama says 57) for people to form unions. The problem is people do not like thugs. This is why you keep losing union elections. You would do your grandsons a huge favor to teach them personal responsibility and to not depend on thee government. Our nations schools which used to be the best in the world have slipped to the middle of the pack even though we spend twice as much. Thank the teachers unions for this. The unions will try to make your grandsons average. Just average like everybody else. If you want them to be exceptional, then it is up to you to instill this in them. Depending on the union has a 40 year history of poor success.

The free fall of the private sector union membership has gone on for the last 4 decades BECAUSE GREEDY CEOS HAVE MOVED MANUFACTURING TO LOW WAGE COUNTRIES LIKE CHINA AND BANGLADESH.

      • floridanativee

Nope, unions have forced manufacturing away due to excessive benefits and early retirements. The proof of this is the auto industry. Now over half of the cars made in the USA are made by non union labor in plants with very high wages and huge waiting lists for employment. Management and employees work together to make the vehicles as efficiently as possible. If a new idea comes up that will save money and make the car better, it is immediately done. In a UAW plant, work rules keep and expand inefficiencies. The auto industry was bailed out once for a $100 MILLION taxpayer expense and they are doing the same thing again, People are retiring in their early 50′s with gold plated no cost healthcare. Who pays for this? That would be taxpayers including members of your union. As long as you think these early retirements are not a problem, then unions are doomed to continue to decline sharply. Blaming the CEO’s just demonstrates that you spew out the union bosses talking points and don’t think things through for yourself. Workers making a Nissan in TN are making great money and great benefits and don’t want a union to siphon off their money and productivity. The unions threw away all of the Twinky jobs (a 3 letter word). The teachers unions in WI (one posts here) lost 40% of their members when given a choice. Their healthcare cost went down 30 % when the union company lost their monopoly. MI voters saw the vast improvements and voted out the mandatory unions. It’s all downhill from here.

Do you not realize that the free fall started 40 years ago? You must just be listening to one side to think that. The reason for the free all is the greed of the union bosses. You have a right to form a union. It is easier now than ever as Obama has made it so. You have to get a majority of employees to wish it done and sign a card. The system is simple. Just get it done. The people who are driving this drive are not your friends. Your employer nor you neighbors owe you healthcare or anything else. We all have choices to make and they lead to results. I would try to make sure your kids and grand kids try to get the work ethic and education to make themselves very successful and very happy citizens. Pinning your hopes on a third party union will lead to failure. The union is not a democratic process and the workplaces isn’t either. Good Luck.
