Walmart associates and allies who are part of the Making Change at Walmart campaign visited members of the Walmart Board of Directors yesterday in cities around the country. They presented letters from the Organization United for Respect at Walmart (OUR Walmart) asking each board member to support associate efforts to get Walmart executive management to take the group’s concerns seriously.
Twice this year, OUR Walmart members from across the country visited Walmart’s home office in Bentonville, Arkansas to ask to meet with Walmart CEO Mike Duke. They wanted to talk to him about the disrespect hourly Walmart associates across the country face, but Duke never met with associates. The letters delivered yesterday expressed disappointment that neither the recipient nor Duke has met with members of OUR Walmart in order to resolve the issues many associates experience in their stores – including poverty-level wages, retaliation against associates who stick together and speak up about problems in their stores, favoritism, and not getting enough hours to support their families (for a full list of concerns check out the OUR Walmart Declaration of Respect). As the letter put it:
We work for the largest company in the United States, owned by the wealthiest family in the nation. By coming together and working to make Walmart a better company, we can be an example to the nation. We care about the company, care about our jobs, and are offering our partnership to make Walmart the best company it can be.
OUR Walmart is made up of thousands of current and former Walmart associates from hundreds of stores in more than 30 states. These associates believe that by working together and with community allies they can improve Walmart and create a future where associates have quality jobs with wages and benefits that support a family.
