Connecticut Keeping Wal-Mart Honest

Posted on March 23, 2006 by webteam

From the Associated Press:

Comptroller Nancy Wyman wants Wal-Mart to guarantee that women will be able to get emergency contraception at all of its Connecticut pharmacies.

Otherwise, she says the state will drop Wal-Mart from the health insurance plan that covers 188,000 state employees and retirees.

Wal-Mart recently decided to start carrying the so-called morning after pill in its pharmacies across the country. But pharmacists who are morally opposed to it are allowed to refer customers to another pharmacist or pharmacy.

Wyman wants a guarantee by April 15th that all 20 Wal-Mart pharmacies in Connecticut will always have someone on duty who is willing to dispense emergency contraception.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal ruled that Wyman must remove pharmacies from the state employee network if they refuse to dispense drugs covered by the health insurance plan.
